Earlier Projects
Creative work rarely develops in a straight line. This archive documents selected earlier collaborations and projects that helped shape the direction of my current work.
Black Marigold
Black Marigold began after Leah Jane Hendrix posted an ad looking for musicians and potential collaborators. Jay responded, and the project developed from there, initially around material that included Hendrix’s song “Nightfall.”
Hendrix named the project Black Marigold, drawing the name from E. Powys Mathers’ Black Marigolds, whose imagery of longing, sensuality, obsession and dark beauty matched the atmosphere she was interested in exploring.
Hendrix brought songs, vocals, melodic ideas and creative direction into the project while the other musicians contributed their own writing, performance and production ideas. The collaboration eventually moved in a different creative direction, and Hendrix left to continue developing her work independently.
